People are susceptible to both good and harmful impacts from the media. Young people are particularly susceptible to the pervasive influence of the media, and young people of all ages and cultures strive valiantly to model their lives after the famous and glamorous individuals they see portrayed in the media. Internalizing the negative messages conveyed in media such as movies, television, radio, and commercials may lead to a variety of challenges for young people, including eating disorders, poor self-esteem, psychiatric troubles, and other issues. Negative effects from the media may pervert the values and behaviours that are necessary to guide young people in the correct way.

The information that is disseminated is influenced both by the activities of media corporations and the personal values of its owners. The personal opinions of reporters have an impact on the topics they cover and the personal spins they inject into the stories they cover. Recent breakthroughs in technology have made it feasible to communicate with a far wider audience than was previously possible.
