How Old Do You Need to Be to Get a Tattoo in Wisconsin?

The practise of getting a tattoo in the state of Wisconsin is illegal for anybody less than 18 years old. This is the case even if the minor’s parents have given their permission for the treatment.

It is illegal in the state of Wisconsin for anyone other than a physician or a licenced technician working under the supervision of a physician in the course of their professional practise to tattoo a minor or even offer to tattoo a minor. The exception to this rule is when the technician is working in the course of their professional practise. Any non-medical tattoo artist who tattoos a minor runs the risk of having their licence revoked by the state. In order to circumvent the law, unlicensed tattoo artists often host parties where people may obtain tattoos. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues a warning that these gatherings should be avoided due to the elevated risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis C.
