What Does “code Orange” Mean?

In hospitals, the term “code orange” often refers to a particular warning notice that is broadcast over the institution’s public address system. A bomb threat, a radioactive leak, a disruption caused by a person who may be mentally ill, or a mass-casualty tragedy are all examples of what might trigger a code orange alert.

In the event that there is a threat of terrorist activity in the area, schools may also implement a “Code Orange” to notify faculty and students of the situation. This is most likely a holdover from the color-coded terrorism threat scale that was used by the Department of Homeland Security before it was discontinued. This scale represented degrees of perceived danger posed by terrorist acts.

Hardcore punk rock band Code Orange, originally known as Code Orange Kids, is based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
