It can seem a little bit strange to see a military sandbag bunker standing in your front yard. Battle re-enactors and paintball players, on the other hand, stand to gain from the manufacture and usage of these items. Place the wooden posts in the ground in a haphazard pattern that roughly resembles the form of the bunker’s walls. On level terrain, labour will be reduced in difficulty.
To get the earth ready, use the shovel you have and dig out all of the plants and grass that are within the bunker.
Start digging. Fill the empty sandbags with the soil that you remove from inside the confines of your bunker using the earth that you remove. When completely loaded, each bag normally weighs a total of 50 pounds. When you are ready to position them, the ties and drawstrings that are included with them will allow you to shut them. Beginning on the bunker’s outside boundaries, dig your way inside. In this method, you will be able to position the filled sandbags in their designated locations as quickly as possible. However, depending on the size of the completed bunker and the number of personnel you have to assist you in its construction, this particular phase of the building process might take several weeks. !!-!! Arrange the filled bags so that their open ends are touching and their long ends are touching in two rows next to each other slightly outside the stakes. Hammer the pegs into the ground to provide support for the bunker’s inside wall. At the absolute least, you need one stake for every two feet of wall that you have. The use of sharpened 2x4s is acceptable for the construction of a relatively modest bunker; however, the use of 4x4s is recommended for the construction of a big bunker because of the much greater amount of sand that will be pushing inward on it. It is recommended that the pegs be driven in vertically so that they are perched just little higher than the very top layer of sandbags. When putting sandbags in place, you should make sure that they are pressed up against the stakes.
When the walls of the bunker have reached the necessary height, position the flak or duck-board planks on top of the bunker. Attach these planks securely to the tops of the stakes by hammering nails into them.
A single layer of sandbags should be placed on top of the boards. As soon as you’re done, the duckboards shouldn’t be able to be seen at all since the sandbags are covering them up. Ensure without a shadow of a doubt that the weight won’t break your stakes. If you see that the boards at the centre of the roof are bowing or if you hear the wood groaning, you should quickly position more stakes closer to the centre of the bunker to assist in supporting the weight of the sandbags.
Place a single layer of sandbags over the boards. When you finish, the duck-boards shouldn’t be visible at all because of the sandbags covering them. Make absolutely sure that your stakes can take the weight. If you see the boards bowing near the center of the roof or hear the wood groaning then immediately place more stakes closer to the center of the bunker to help support the weight of the sandbags.
